Barcamps in Belgium

The Barcamp concept is already known in Belgium for some years now. The first Barcamp was organised in 2006 in Antwerp.

In the wake of the success of Barcamp Antwerp, barcamps in Ghent, Brussels and Hasselt were organised, with Antwerp and Ghent being the most active cities. In total, around 10 barcamps will have taken place in Belgium over the last 4 years (note: let us know if you have more accurate data)

The early Barcamps had a strong focus on IT/web topics. Presentations focussed on web programming, web marketing, open source software and hobby development projects. In 2009 also "soft" topics appeared on the agenda. This ranged from team management over ecology to finding happiness in live.

Up to now, 2 theme oriented barcamps have been held.

In 2008 a mobilecamp was organised in Hasselt. Due to the early state of the mobile internet market the organisation combined the Barcamp concept with a classical conference: all presentation slots in the morning were pre-programmed and occupied by professional speakers. The presentation slots in the afternoon were free for participants to fill in. This approach was taken since most attendees indicated they wanted to learn what Mobile Internet was all about and only few felt like contributing.

The second theme oriented barcamp in Belgium was Bizcamp 2009. For the first time, a new audience was addressed by the barcamp concept. Bizcamp did not focus on developers or marketeers, but on entrepreneurs willing to start a business or share their experiences in their existing business.

MobileCamp Brussels is now the third themed barcamp in Belgium. Given the popularity of Mobile Internet, around 100 people are expected, about the same as the general barcamps in Antwerp and Ghent.
